Show Up for South Africa’s Teens
14 June 2026, Cape Town – As South Africa celebrates Youth Month in June, the Santa Shoebox Project (SSP) is reminding South Africans to celebrate and show up for the country’s teenagers – a group that is often overlooked but which deserves just as much support as their little brothers and sisters.
Over the past 20 years, the Santa Shoebox Project has reached more than 1.5 million children, tens of thousands of whom were Grade 11 learners. Each teen received specific items they needed ahead of their all-important matric year.
“It’s always heartwarming and inspiring to see firsthand how teenagers’ lives can be changed by a single act of kindness. Our donors have done wonderful things for our Grade 11 learners over the years,” says Santa Shoebox Project CEO Deb Zelezniak.
How South Africa has shown up for its Santa Shoebox teenagers
“There are many beautiful stories I can tell about how South Africa has shown up for our Santa Shoebox teenage beneficiaries,” says Zelezniak.
“Once, a Grade 11 boy cried tears of joy when he received a shirt and tie so that he could go into his first job interview with dignity and pride. On other occasions, teenagers have received quality hygiene items, books and stationery that really boosted their confidence ahead of their matric year. A group of boys danced around their class when they received rugby balls.”
“Hair and nail accessories, cute toys and PEP Stores vouchers have also brought great joy to our teens – a class even broke out in song to say thank you.”
“Another class told us they loved their gifts so much – they were “speechless”. And one gift that has made a lasting impression on all of us was when shoebox donors from Secunda gave a Grade 11 teen a life-changing voucher for driving lessons!”
Zelezniak concludes: “Let’s show up for South Africa’s teens in 2026 and create more beautiful stories to tell. For a teen, a simple gift can open new worlds of possibility. Knowing that people care about you and your future, is a powerful vote of confidence. Together, we can show our teens that we believe in them.”
20 years of impact
The Santa Shoebox Project was founded in 2006 – and apart from providing gift boxes to more than 1.35 million children, its SSP Legacy arm has also reached over 180 000 children by establishing and upgrading early childhood development (ECD) centres across South Africa. The organisation also invests in teacher training and the installation of reading corners to improve cognitive, language, and social-emotional development in children.
Beyond infrastructure and training, the project continues its core mission of providing tangible essentials to children in need. Every traditional and virtual Santa Shoebox contains eight specified items, including vital hygiene tools like a bar of soap, a washcloth, a toothbrush, and toothpaste, as well as educational supplies – along with clothing, treats, and age-appropriate discretionary items specifically picked out for each recipient.
As the Santa Shoebox Project celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026, the organisation invites South Africans to support its work. Donors can begin preparing their boxes now to spread the cost, with corporate pledges opening on 1 August and individual pledges opening on 1 September.

About the Santa Shoebox Project
Traditional Santa Shoebox: Over the last 20 years, more than 1.35 million Santa Shoeboxes, each containing eight specified items of treats and essentials, and other goodies, have been given to underprivileged and socially vulnerable children. From 1 September each year, Santa Shoebox donors choose their beneficiary children by name, age and gender and are given the child’s clothing size. Each personalised shoebox reaches the very child for whom it was pledged, tracked by QR code, and can include a heartwarming personalised note from the donor to the child.
Virtual Santa Shoebox: These shoeboxes are purchased online by donors and are available year-round, meeting the needs of donors who live too far from drop-off points or are unable to get to the shops. These shoeboxes are purchased on the Santa Shoebox website, packed by the Santa Shoebox Team and delivered to children attending far-flung rural facilities. A VSS contains the eight specified items, as well as additional items, such as Book Dash books, and costs R500 plus an optional delivery fee of R30. Donors can also opt to include Subz Reusable Sanitary Pads in their boxes.
SSP Legacy: Under its SSP Legacy arm, the organisation also does impactful work in transforming existing and establishing new Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in rural communities across South Africa. This work also includes training for ECD teachers and establishing reading corners in ECD centres to improve children’s cognitive, behavioural, language, fine motor skills and social-emotional development. While all the Santa Shoebox Project’s operating costs are covered by corporate sponsors, private donations and surplus funds generated by the sale of Virtual Santa Shoeboxes accrue to the SSP Legacy, thus far reaching more than 180 000 children
Fiduciary information: As a Level One Contributor to B-BBEE, the Santa Shoebox Project earns 100 points on the generic scorecard, and with Section 18A status, is able to provide a tax-deductible receipt in recognition of donations. The Project is an initiative of the JOG Trust (IT2671/2009). The Trust is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO-930031301), a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO 102-098) and is 100% SED compliant.
