In two weeks, 84 663 children’s names will appear on the Santa Shoebox website and, somewhere among them, is one that will stop you scrolling.
Perhaps it will be a little girl the same age as your own child, or one the age you were when you received a Christmas present you never forgot. Perhaps you will choose an older child because you know how easily the little ones steal hearts, or you may not be able to explain it all. You will simply see a name and think, this one.
And just like that, a name that meant nothing to you in the morning is following you around every time you go shopping.
You notice a T-shirt and wonder whether they would like the colour. You find yourself undecided between two toys and then you pick the one that feels right.
You already know the rest of the story: the shopping, the decorating, the satisfaction of the drop-off. You know that months from now, your child will receive your gift, and feel something that has nothing to do with the goodies inside it. Feeling chosen does that. It stays.
